Field
Day is a yearly preparedness exercise sponsored by the
American Radio Relay League (ARRL), the national association
for amateur radio.
To
the best of his recollection, Arthur
Arestad (W8WTL), who has been a resident of Tipp City
for over 40 years, says that 2001 was the first time Field
Day was conducted in Tipp City.
Tipp City amateur radio operators worked
around the clock using emergency power to make
contacts with other amateur radio operators across the United States,
Canada, and Puerto Rico, just to name a few of the places contacted.
Field
Day is designed to test the ability of amateur
radio operators to set up and operate portable stations under
emergency conditions, such as the loss of electricity during
storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and other disasters. In
the event of an emergency, Tipp City is fortunate to have
many amateur radio operators to volunteer their services.
In 2008, Governor Strickland has proclaimed June 23-29, 2008 Amateur Radio Operators Appreciation Week. Mayor Tim E. Evans presented a proclamation to Tipp City area Hams designating June 23-29, 2008 as Amateur Radio Week in Tipp City, Ohio.
Field
Day is a test of skill but it is also a contest for fun,
socializing, and is the largest "on-air" operating
event each year. Tipp
City 2009 Field Day will be
June 27 and 28. Preparations
are already being made for this event. Plan to
come and join in the fun.
