The Troy Strawberry Festival began in 1977, with June 2010 marking
the 34th annual event. Fulton Farms, just outside
of Troy, is the largest single producer of strawberries in
the Midwest, making Troy the "Strawberry Capital of
Ohio."
The festival is held the first weekend of June and is a major celebration
of early summer in southwest Ohio. Both the Miami County
Amateur Radio Club (MCARC) amateurs and the Tipp City amateur
radio operators volunteer each year to help coordinate the
two-hour parade, which is broadcast live by a local television
station in Dayton, WHIO TV.
Amateur
radio communications are made using either the Miami County
Amateur Radio Club (MCARC) local repeater, 145.23 MHz, or the
147.330 MHz repeater. The 147.330 MHz repeater is owned
and operated by David Robinson, WB8PMG. Digital packet
communications are sometimes used to relay corrections of the
parade unit order to the parade reviewing stand, where the
WHIO TV parade commentators are located.
